Hundreds of Police Departments Have Large Race Gap in Police Department Staffing

Fact: Hundreds of police departments across the U.S. have police forces where the percentage of white officers is more than 30% percentage points higher than the racial makeup of the local community. 

Fact: Many major cities’ police forces have at least one department where the percentage of white officers is more than 40% greater than the community they serve.

Children of Inmates & Mental Illness

Fact: There are approximately 2.7 million children with one or both parents incarcerated in the United States.

Fact: One quarter of black children born in 1990 have seen a parent go to jail or prison by age 14.  

Fact: Children with incarcerated parents are three times more likely to suffer depression and behavioral problems. 

Fact: Children with incarcerated parents are also more likely to suffer from higher levels of asthma, obesity, and speech problems.

Arrests in the Nation’s Capital, Part 4

Fact: In Washington, D.C., the adult population is approximately 42% white and 47.6% African American – nearly equal.

Fact: The only category where whites made up a majority of arrests was in the “failure to disobey a lawful order” category of traffic arrests.

Fact: This category represents almost half of all white arrests per year, but only approximately 5% of total arrests in the District of Columbia annually.

Fact: The address for these arrests is commonly 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (the White House).

Fact: In other words, nearly half of the total annual arrests of white people in Washington, D.C. occur during protests, when white people *want* to get arrested.

Arrests in the Nation’s Capital, Part 3

Fact: In Washington, D.C., the adult population is approximately 42% white and 47.6% African American – nearly equal.

Fact: Seven out of 10 traffic arrests are of African Americans.

Fact: “The disparity was less evident for traffic offenses that involved conduct more obvious to an observer, like Driving Under the Influence, as opposed to conduct that is less externally obvious, such as driving on a suspended license.”

Fact: In Washington, D.C., the adult population is approximately 42% white and 47.6% African American – nearly equal.

Fact: Wards with more African American residents witnessed far more arrests.

Fact: The majority of arrests were made in the five wards that are home to 9 out of 10 African Americans residents of the city. In all wards, African Americans made up a disproportionate number of arrests.
